Everyone wants to know the secret, to put their finger on the magic button in their search for wealth, happiness and a deeply meaningful purpose-driven life. Ideally, all would delight in an open-sesame to riches and overnight fame. Well you can’t get any more direct than this.

Quest: Happy, Wealthy & Wise is fresh. It’s provocative. It’s a sexy meeting of philosophy, open minds, dramatic vignettes, and incredibly effective life-altering techniques and practices.
Experience a whole new frontier open before your eyes, filled with new possibilities and watch your life change inexorably for the better!

PRODUCER/DIRECTOR
Award winning filmmaker, Lili Fournier, is credited with leading the way in pioneering spiritual programming on the airwaves across North America. This is her 12th Quest special, and her best work to date.

HAPPY, WEALTH & WISE

Your step-by-step daily guide to the spiritual power secrets to help you achieve happiness and extraordinary success.

You’ll learn
• the simple yet incredibly effective steps to building your house of happiness,
• how to create personal wealth,
• how to use powerful personal change techniques like The Work by Byron Katie,
• and the Sedona Method with Hale Dwoskin.

And so it is that we set off in life on a Quest to fulfill our desires, to find the spark that makes us feel vibrantly alive. Desire, after all, is the motivating force and generating power of all human action. Virtually all the great things ever accomplished in the world were done by men and women who were dreamers who made their dreams come true. Just like our experts have done.

What if there is no secret, no seven steps to follow? What if we are okay just the way we are, that we simply need to release the things that are holding us back from living in joy and happiness right now?

No matter what you’re calling in life, wealth, essentially, is what you’re after. The question then is how do you define real wealth? As one of our experts put it, “Most people think wealth is just money. And money is a wonderful thing, but the real goal is to have the full plume of your human imagination 360 degrees. Be family rich, be socially rich, be spiritually rich, be financially rich, and be emotionally rich.”

Embark on a Quest, and turn your dreams into reality.

Desmond Tutu Discusses What People Are Questing For Today

Today we’ll see what Desmond Tutu thinks about the quest for wealth. I’m sharing some interview excerpts from Lili Fournier’s new PBS DVD – Quest for Success. We will learn about what some of the participants think about the quest for success and the quest for wealth. Visit each day throughout the week to learn about what another participant in Quest for Success thinks about this topic. Throughout the week I’ll share thoughts from Richard Branson, Marci Shimoff, Jack Assaraff, Jack Canfield and Desmond Tutu.

Desmond Tutu What People Are Questing For Today

DESMOND: Really, we are wanting to find our way back home. I think it was T.S. Eliot who said… we will travel, and when we arrive, we will recognize it for the first time, the way we were, and were meant to be. Because the extraordinary thing is discovering that what will give us ultimate satisfaction is not this, or that possession, or even a state of mind or consciousness, it will be God. The infinite. That we are almost the ultimate paradox. The finite, who are created for the infinite. Nothing less than God will ultimately satisfy us. And so many of us strive after this, that, or the other, seeking, seeking, seeking satisfaction. And it all turns into dust and ashes in our mouths because incredibly, we’re made for transcendence, and that’s what we’re seeking. And when we find it, we say ahh. This is home.

LILI: What was your most life-transforming experience? In that regard…when you found your own core and inner strength and the faith to take you through what you’ve been through.

DESMOND: I never thought that I had inner strength. I’ve known that I depended so very much on others. I had a wonderful mother, she was not an educated person. She was incredible in her generosity. And I resembled her physically, she had a large nose like mine, she was dumpy, too, like me… but I’ve always said, I… I hope I will be able to resemble her in her spirit as I resemble her physically. She was such an incredibly compassionate person. And I think that I owe [unintelligible] some of who I am others, Father Trevor Hardenston who came to work in South Africa. The first time I saw him, I didn’t know who he was. I was surprised.

I was about 9 years old, standing with my mother who was a domestic worker, a cook at a facility for black blind women, and this white man strutted past wearing a long white cassock, and he had a huge sombrero, and as he passed my mother he tipped his hat to my mother. I didn’t know then that gesture was …, made such an incredible impression on me. A white man… tipping his hat to my mother, a black woman…in South Africa in those days, it was just mind-boggling, but I discovered later when I met with Trevor Hardenston, that was how he believed, that was what he believed about human beings—that we were created in the image of God, and that we have a dignity and when I was about 15 or so I had T.B. and I spent 20 months in hospital.

And …, who was a very busy person, almost every week of those 20 months, and I was just a township ghetto urchin, and this very important man made me think and believe that I was special. And I’ve had so many who have nurtured me and helped me to grow into a sense of wonder of God’s creation, how human beings are of infinite worth, whatever, whoever they may be, and it was just some of that that sustained and inspired me as I with others struggled against the injustices of apartheid.

Jack Canfield Talks About the Quest for True Wealth

Today we’ll see what Jack Canfield thinks about the quest for wealth.

Jack Canfield About the Quest for True Wealth

LILI: That was my next question. What is true wealth? What is the most important thing in your life now?

JACK: True wealth, to me, is waking up in the morning excited as opposed to ‘Oh no, not another day.’ I remember when I had an operation about 10 years ago on my gallbladder. It had to be worked with and I went under anesthesia and if anyone has ever had an operation… am I going to wake up, are they going to put some bad blood in me, are they going to cut the wrong thing? You're in the recovery room and your eyes open and you look around and there's three nurses and you're still here and you go, ‘Yes, I'm still here.’ I have that feeling every morning - I get to get up. The first thing I do is I do a gratitude process, I'm grateful for the weather, the day, Southern California, my wife, my dog, the cat, my staff, all of that stuff. If I never even went out and ever experienced it I might be fulfilled in that moment because I'm grateful for it.

For me, my body's healthy, my wife loves me, my kids are growing and individuating, my staff is happy, people love my work, I get invited to speak places, I live in a paradise. I truly know I could close my eyes and sit in a cave for months and be happy because I know I'm there, I could do that through meditation, through self-appreciation, self-awareness. The other thing is that I get about five hundred letters a week saying, ‘You changed my life.’

A prisoner in Oregon said that ‘before reading your book I never took responsibility. I blamed everybody and now I love my life even though I'm on death row. I'm a counselor.’ ‘How could you be so happy, you're in prison!’ ‘I don't know, I just am. I used to hate the guards, now I like the guards. Now the guards are nice to me.’ Now the same warden, he started reading stories to the prisoners every night, like bedtime stories. One prisoner wrote me a letter which he forwarded to me once he said God, if I had been read stories like this as a kid, I wouldn't be in prison. You think, ‘Wow, I'm making an impact, I matter, I count. What I do is significant.’ Who could want more than that?

LILI: I find it really significant that you committed twenty years of your life to teaching self-esteem courses. I think it would be remiss not to ask you since you have the experience of having worked with so many people: what do you think holds most people back and what are the most powerful attributes or ways of breaking through limiting beliefs?

JACK: Well, two thing hold people back. One is limiting beliefs and the other is fear. Fear is based on limited beliefs, that I'm not enough to handle whatever it is I think I'm afraid of. If I knew from a total place of self-worth that I could handle anything that ever happened to me, then I wouldn't care what's going to happen to me - get arrested, lose my wife, get sick, lose my job. I would still know I can handle that. You know everybody, everyone of you watching this, you handled everything that ever happened to you up until this moment. You may not have handled it elegantly, you learned to do it better. The fact is you've handled it. So at some point I think that's why the older you get, the wiser you get.

You realize nothing can really kill me and if anything, it does make me stronger. If I'm afraid it's because I projected an image out of the future of something bad I think is going to happen. Number one, stop projecting bad images. Use the Law of Attraction to project a positive image to create a positive feeling. Number two: know that if even if that bad thing did happen, you could handle it, look at these hostages that are taken hostage and kept for years like in Iran. They come out and they create great lives again. People that were in solitary confinement in Vietnam, eight and a half years, couldn't talk to anyone else. A friend of mine, Jerry Coffee, he had that experience.

He said he wouldn't trade those eight and a half years for anything. He said, ‘because, I had to learn to get to know the only person in that cell. Me. I basically realized I psychoanalyze myself. Who was the only other person I could talk to? God. So I got very clear about everything in life.’ He said ‘I wouldn't want to go do it again, but I'm glad I had that experience. It made me the man I am today.’ One of the most compassionate, beautiful, clear, wise, articulate people I've ever met in my life. If he can handle that, certainly we can all handle anything.

There's really nothing to be afraid of. When you realize that you can't even die because you're already an eternal soul. We're all afraid of death. I like to describe death as walking from this room to that room. I'm still here, I'm just in a different room. I've met people who had near death experiences. They're all fearless. They're all very peaceful, even more so than I feel I am. I'll say to them why because I know, there's no doubt . What can you do, kill me. Alright, kill me. Who cares.

And so, my point of view is when you realize that there's really nothing to be afraid of and you start taking action, you start getting the results you want, you just go ‘Wow, what was I doing all those years.’ Wasting my life. I remember a woman, 65 years old. She picked up the back of a car. A friend of mine read about her in the National Enquirer I went to interview her. She wouldn't grant the interview. He finally got it months and months of persistences.

He said, ‘Why don't you want to talk about that?’ She said, ‘I'll tell you why. When you do something when you're 65 years old and you didn't think you could do it and you could, you have to ask yourself a very difficult question. What else in my life that I could have done that I didn't do. At my age, did I waste my whole life?’

LILI: That’s very poignant.

John Assaraf Talks About the Quest for Wealth

Today we’ll see what John Assaraf thinks about the quest for wealth.

John Assaraf About the Quest for Wealth

LILI: If you were- well, let me ask you this. If you were to start a statement with Quest for Wealth, what does wealth mean to you? And the notion of being on the quest. What is your quest now?

JOHN: Well, my—when I was younger, I wanted money. That was all I wanted to focus on. If I had money, then I’d have everything else. And that’s because I didn’t have a lot of money when I was a kid. We weren’t poor, we were just an average family. But I just wanted more. And I worked so hard in my 20s that I ended up with something called ulcerative colitis. And those are ulcers in the colon, and they are really not fun. And at that time I really learned how to take care of my health. And have a great relationship with God. I’ve been, fortunately or unfortunately, married twice. And it’s the third time now, and I have the soul mate of my dreams. And had I understood the value of having all those things in place, I probably wouldn’t have gotten divorced to begin with. But I suggest to anyone that balance doesn’t really mean equal. When you’ve got a balance, you have a lot of different things moving. And so Having It All, the title of my book, the Street Kid’s Guide to Having It All, I did that to show people that you really can have health and have wealth, they really can have the spiritual connection and relationships, and they can, absolutely, have the career, all at the same time. And the key for me was, make sure that you have your values in place. If you line up your values with the right beliefs, then you can have it all. All of those things without sacrificing any of them, at the same time.

LILI: So what’s important to you now? What’s your quest?

JOHN: There’s a few things. Most important to me… my children. There’s nothing on this earth I love more. And my wife is jut my rock and my angel. Having a deep spiritual connection with God is something that I’m enjoying so much in my life and I missed a lot of that In my early 20s. And enjoying the power of the power, appreciating all that really is around us… compassion, and really having compassion to other human beings. And to me, I’m really going to say, contribution really is huge to me right now. I’m in my mid-40s, and I’ve got life by the tail. Or it’s got me by the tail. SO now I can help people think differently, feel differently, strategize differently about themselves, give them a chance to enjoy some of the good life. You know, I think that nobody wants to go through life, I know I don’t, having an ordinary life. So if I could be a part of having somebody have a slightly different life, an extraordinary life, by helping them be happier or spend more time with their wife or children, that gives my life so much purpose. So much passion… that’s my calling now.

LILI: Well, what an extremely generous soul you are.

JOHN: Well thank you.

LILI: I don’t think that… and this is not to be saying something in a negative way… I find that our culture is very self-centered. And when we talk about wealth it is very much about me, and what I need to get. Versus, yes, we need to do that and create a strong foundation for ourselves… but then when is enough? At what point do you have to be able to take it out and give it away, right?

JOHN: Well, I don’t know if there has to be that. I think that, when people start to give from themselves… see, everything we do is because of feeling. We go to work because it’ll give us a feeling. We’re in love because of the feeling. We start a business because of the feeling. I think that when people really get into contributing either their wisdom, or their time, or their money, the feeling that they get is so spectacular, of helping another human being, I think it is something some are taught to do more than others. My wife and I, we look at how can I do better in business, and how can she do better in business, so we can give our money away. So we don’t do it so we eat more now, or eat better…you know, America’s the only country where we die of over-eating. So, for us, it’s can we contribute more of our time and our finances to make a difference for people that either can’t do it for themselves, or they don’t have enough guidance. And that is the biggest joy in the world. I just get so excited about that.

LILI: Well, that’s the point I was making. That’s where you get your juice from, and I would like to see more people get it from that. Because then we’d have a different world, wouldn’t we?

Marci Shimoff Shares Her Thoughts About the Quest for Wealth

Today we’ll see what Marci Shimoff thinks about the quest for wealth.

Marci Shimoff on the Quest for Wealth

LILI: Quest for wealth, it seems that we’re all in search of this. (MARCI: Yes.) What does it mean to you?

MARCI: I think the quest for wealth that we’re in search of is the quest for truth, love, and abundance in all areas of our lives that starts with this feeling of fulfillment from within. I’m all for a concept that I once learned of 200% of life, a hundred percent being external wealth and a hundred percent being internal wealth, being the fullness of love and life. Certainly, there are many people out there that have the external wealth, and they are not happy. And certainly, there are a number of people out there who have an inner state of happiness, and perhaps they don’t have the external wealth. My feeling is that we are all here to experience both inner and outer wealth in abundance on all levels which is truth, love, fulfillment.

LILI: To encapsulate your thoughts on success and how we can bring the essence of “The Secret” or law of attraction to work in our lives in being more abundant.

MARCI: My feeling is that a lot of people have… As a society, I think we have it backwards. We think that going out and gathering all these great things in life is going to bring us happiness, that the more success we have, the more happiness we’ll have. The opposite is actually true. The happier we are, the more we are vibrating at a higher energetic level of fulfillment of love, the greater success we’ll have, the easier we will draw things to us. So, success is not the basis of happiness, but happiness is the basis of success.

LILI: Isn’t that interesting?

MARCI: So, the real truth of the law of attraction is that we’re not there to attract all of the things to make us happy. That’s just the symptoms. What we’re there to do is to raise our energetic vibrations so that we are living in a state of joy, of peace, of love, of abundance, an abundant inner state of fulfillment. There was, truly, a distinct difference between the people that I interviewed who were living in this state. It’s a neurophysiological state. You can measure it in your brain waves. You can measure it in your biochemistry. You can measure it in your heart rhythms.

People who are living in this state of joy and peace have a different physiology than everybody else. And, ultimately, I think that is the goal of using the law of attraction. What good is using the law of attraction to create a great car and a great house if you aren’t happy also? The car and the house are not going to bring that to you. They won’t do it. So, I think our attention is a little too much focussed on the outer when we need to also focus it on the inner.

LILI: It’s like everything in life, in a sense, is a mirror to some extent, and you have this wonderful story that I read in your book that encapsulated it so beautifully.

MARCI: Everything that we create on the outside is truly just a mirror of what’s going on inside of us. And there’s a story of a far away village where there’s a House of a Thousand Mirrors, and one day a happy dog went to visit this House of a Thousand Mirrors, and he went bounding up the stairs and looked inside the house, and he was greeted by the faces of a thousand dogs with big grins and wagging tails. And the dog said, “Oh, this is a wonderful place! I love it here!” And as he leaves, he thinks to himself, I must come back and visit here more often. That same afternoon, a very sad, grumpy dog goes limping up to the House of a Thousand Mirrors and looks in and growls, and he sees back growling at him a thousand angry, mean dogs, and he says, “This is a horrible place! I must never come back here and visit!”

In fact, the world is as we are. When we are the bounding dog, the dog with love, the dog with joy, the world will greet us that way, and we will perceive the world that way. And when we are the angry, upset, judgmental, begrudging dog, that is what the world will look like. So, which world would you rather live in because you create the world that you live in?

Richard Branson Shares His Thoughts About the Quest for Wealth

Over the next several days, I’m going to share some interview excerpts from Lili Fournier’s new PBS DVD – Quest for Success. We will learn about what some of the participants think about the quest for success and the quest for wealth. Visit each day throughout the week to learn about what another participant in Quest for Success thinks about this topic. I’ll share thoughts from Richard Branson, Marci Shimoff, Jack Assaraff, Jack Canfield and Desmond Tutu.

Sir Richard Branson About the Quest for Wealth

LILI: Can we talk about the Quest for Wealth, and what that means. The world itself looks at wealth in monetary terms. So what is your interpretation of what that is we’re looking for? And if you could incorporate the Quest for Wealth in your answer, that would be great.

RICHARD: Well I think that a Quest for Wealth, per say, is not a particularly satisfying thing to do. But having a quest or quests is very satisfying. And if the by-product of those quests is that wealth is created, and you use that wealth productively, that’s satisfying. And in my own particular case, I originally wanted to start a magazine. When I was 15 years old, I wanted to put the world right. And the Vietnamese war raging, and I wanted to do my little bit to stop it. And in order for that magazine to survive, I had to become an entrepreneur. I had to become a businessman—I had to worry about the paper manufacturing and the distribution, the marketing and so on. And the end result was that it became successful. I could then set about to challenging myself to make a difference in other areas. I love music, so I found a particular band that I loved the music of, and we couldn’t find anybody else to put them out, so I decided to form a record company. Now, the end product of forming that record company, the product of signing bands like the Rolling Stones, Genesis and Janet Jackson, was wealth. But that was not where I got my satisfaction. I got my satisfaction from creating a great record company that I was proud of.

LILI: So, the old adage of follow your bliss, follow your passion, is what’s been leading you, really, all along.

RICHARD: Yes, and I think that the most successful people are the people who do not sit down and think, how can I make a fortune? It’s people who have a passion for something, for instance when I moved into the airline business I hated flying o n other people’s airlines, and I felt I could do it better. If I was looking for wealth from doing it, everybody would have advised me that I was mad. But my reason for doing it was creating the kind of airline that I’d like to fly. As it turned out, I created Virgin Atlantic that I liked to fly and other people liked to fly, and 20 years later it’s enormously successful. We’ve managed to sell 49% of it to airlines that are worth billions of dollars, and we’ve made good money from it. But if I’d actually gone into it because I thought I was going to make good money, I don’t think I would’ve made a penny.

LILI: Well, you’re doing things contrary to people’s opinions. And that’s part of the secret to your success. Now entering the marketplace with Virgin America, I’m not sure exactly what you’re calling it, and everybody’s saying, what?

RICHARD: I think the most successful entrepreneurs are the ones who do things contrary to opinion. The standard business school advice is stick to your onions, don’t do anything to stray from that. Or Nike stick with shoes, Microsoft stick with computers. Coca-cola stick with soft drinks. At Virgin we love the idea of becoming a way of life brand, of challenging businesses in other areas. And we love doing that, it’s more challenging, we learn a lot more. We meet a lot of people. And contrary to advice in business school, I actually think it makes a lot of sense. Because music shops was one of the first things we did. I doubt there’s a great future in music shops with Ipods and other methods of getting your music. So if we just did music shops, we wouldn’t survive. But because we’ve moved into things like mobile phones, where a lot of kids’ spending power is going…if one business is suffering from a lot of competition, or new technology, another one of our businesses can do well.

He has traveled to more than 62 countries meeting with presidents, prime ministers and crowned rulers of major nations. Since 1959 His Holiness has received over 84 awards, honorary doctorates, prizes, etc., in recognition of his message of peace, non-violence, inter-religious understanding, universal responsibility and compassion. Archbishop Desmond Tutu is a South African cleric and activist who rose to worldwide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. Tutu was elected and ordained the first black South African Anglican Archbishop. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 , the Albert Schweitzer Prize for Humanitarianism, and the Magubela prize for liberty in 1986. In February 2007 he was awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize. He was generally credited with coining the term “Rainbow Nation” as a metaphor for post-apartheid South Africa. The expression has since entered mainstream consciousness to describe South Africa's ethnic diversity.

Sir Richard Branson is best known for his Virgin brand of over 360 companies. In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores, Virgin Records. With his flamboyant and competitive style, Branson's Virgin brand grew rapidly during the 1980s, as he set up Virgin Atlantic Airways. An inveterate adventurer, his current passions include Virgin Mobile and the upcoming Virgin Galactic. Sir Richard is a noted philanthropist and member of the Clinton Global Initiative, who has devoted billions of dollars to reviving the ecology.

Russell Simmons has been instrumental in bringing hip-hop to every facet of business and media since its inception in the late 1970s: in music with the co-founding of the immensely successful original Def Jam Recordings; in the fashion industry with the trail-blazing Phat Farm, Baby Phat, and Run Athletics clothing lines; in film with Simmons Lathan Media Group; in television with HBO's "The Def Comedy Jam" and "Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry"; on Broadway with the Tony Award winning stage production "Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway". Russell Simmons spends considerable energy working for social, political, and philanthropic causes, pushing hip-hop on to new plateaus of power and relevance.

Stephen Covey is recognized as one of Time magazine's 25 most influential Americans, who has dedicated his life to demonstrating how every person can truly control their destiny with profound, yet straightforward guidance. As an internationally respected leadership authority, family expert, teacher, organizational consultant, and author, his advice has given insight to millions. He has sold over 20 million books including his phenomenally popular 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which was named the #1 most influential business book of the last century.

Jack Canfield is the originator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, which fostered the emergence of inspirational anthologies as a genre, rapidly growing to a billion dollar market. As the driving force behind the development and delivery of over 100 million books sold, Jack Canfield is uniquely qualified to talk about success. Behind the empire Time magazine called the "publishing phenomenon of the decade" he is the leading expert in creating peak performance for entrepreneurs and leaders.

Marci Shimoff is the woman's face of the biggest self-help book phenomenon in history, Chicken Soup for the Soul. Her six bestselling titles in the series, including Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul and Chicken Soup for the Mother’s Soul, have met with stunning success, selling more than 13 million copies worldwide. Marci is one of the bestselling female nonfiction authors of all time. Byron Katie is the creator of The Work, a system she invented to teach people how to end their own suffering. As she guides people through a unique process of inquiry, they find that their stressful beliefs—about life, other people, or themselves— radically shift their lives. Based on her own life experience of how suffering is created and ended, The Work is an astonishingly simple process, accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, and requires nothing more than a pen and paper and an open mind. Through this process, anyone can learn to trace unhappiness to its source and eliminate it.

Today John shares that passion with audiences worldwide. John is also one of the Marshall Goldsmith School of Management's Distinguished Thought Leaders. In the last 20 years, John has built four multi-million dollar companies.
