Social Networking Sites - Where Can We Find You?

The blogosphere simply loves to slurp up social-networking traffic stats, and on Monday we got a nice tasty serving of them with some new numbers from Compete.com for the month of January. The results? Facebook is in the lead, with about 68 million unique visitors, well ahead of MySpace's 58 million. (The two are pegged at 1.1 billion and 810 million page views, respectively.)

This may be the first survey we've seen that puts Facebook ahead of the News Corp.-owned MySpace in U.S. traffic. It also puts Twitter as the third-biggest social-media site in the country by total page views, with only about six million unique visitors but a whopping 54 million views.

Compete's numbers are interesting, because they often are pretty different from other analytics firms'. Here are some clarifications, explained to CNET News in an e-mail sent by Compete's Andy Kazeniac: These are numbers stemming entirely from Web browser data in the U.S. That means that you won't be pulling in any international numbers, where most of Facebook's users are now, or data from widgets or third-party applications, which are how many avid Twitter users access the service. That means that it's likely that Twitter's reach is bigger than the numbers indicate.

What's also intriguing is that there are a few social-media sites, like Flixster and LiveJournal, with relatively low unique visitor counts but proportionally very high page view counts, indicating that they probably have smallish bases of very loyal users.

Also pulling in notable numbers are LinkedIn, with about 11 million unique users, Classmates.com, with about 17 million, and Reunion.com, with slightly under 14 million. On the other end? AOL's Bebo, an $850 million purchase, which Compete.com clocks in as having just shy of three million unique visitors. True, its biggest user bases are in the U.K. and Ireland, but that's not good considering the price tag.

Still, statistics are like tequila shots. Always take 'em with a few grains of salt and a slice of lime, and be warned that they may give you headaches.

New Year's Resolutions

It is that time of year again :)

These are some of the things I'd like to focus on and accomplish in 2009 --

1 - Finish final editing for Book Promo 201 -- currently with my publisher for layout
2 - Finish and start to promote - ebook about utilizing Amazon more completely
3 - Finish and start to promote - ebook about selling books on Ebay
4 - Continue to promote my virtual tour and Web 2.0 promotional business
5 - Write the second book in my Cape Hatteras mystery series
6 - Compile class lessons and begin to promote and teach promotional classes based on my two author promotion books
7 - Find time to go to the beach for at least a week :)
8 - After my next mystery is complete - write my next historic suspense or a contemporary suspense
9 - Possibly write a restaurant promotional book that I have in mind

10 - And, of course, I want to lose weight, but the other things are more possible :)

My biggest personal hope for 2009 is to be able to have some time for myself in the next year - the 80+ hour work weeks need to go :)

How to Promote Your Blog – The Definitive Guide to Promoting

I read this on the Evan Carmichael entrepreneur forums the other day and asked if I could share it here --

How to Promote Your Blog – The Definitive Guide to Promoting

Many of our clients ask us this question time and time again. “How do I promote my blog?” We are glad that they ask because we have a blog of our own and we have become very successful at driving huge loads of traffic to it.

If you always wanted to know how to promote your blog, this article is exactly what you are looking for.

Write quality content
It might sound obvious to most of us that your blog’s content has to be excellent. In many cases, however, bloggers write mediocre posts and spend most of their time trying to drive traffic to their blogs. Granted, they get a fair amount of visits, but those people will never come back. Converting one-time visitors into subscribers is by far the most important thing you need to do to keep a steady flow of traffic visiting your blog.

There is another excellent reason to write quality articles. The better your content is the more people will link to your blog. And as we all know, quality incoming links are the key to high search engine rankings.

Let your readers subscribe
There are two major ways people can subscribe to your blog: email and RSS. Give them both options. RSS is a great technology but a huge percentage of your readers are not very familiar with it.

Submit your feeds
Every time you write a new post, submit its RSS/Atom feed to the major feed directories: FeedAge, FeedRaider, FeedAgg, FeedFury, GoldenFeed, and BlogDigger. Also submit your blog’s main RSS if you haven’t done so yet.

Ping your posts
When you ping your posts, the search engines are more likely to index them faster. These are the ping services that I use:
http://rpc.pingomatic.com/, http://api.my.yahoo.com/RPC2, http://bblog.com/ping.php, http://blog.goo.ne.jp/XMLRPC, http://bulkfeeds.net/rpc, http://coreblog.org/ping/, http://ping.cocolog-nifty.com/xmlrpc, http://ping.rootblog.com/rpc.php, http://ping.syndic8.com/xmlrpc.php, http://rcs.datashed.net/RPC2, http://rpc.blogrolling.com/pinger/, http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping, http://rpc.weblogs.com/RPC2, http://xmlrpc.blogg.de/, http://xping.pubsub.com/ping/, http://api.moreover.com/RPC2, http://www.blogdigger.com/RPC2, http://ping.weblogalot.com/rpc.php, http://www.weblogues.com/RPC/, http://ping.bloggers.jp/rpc/, http://ping.feedburner.com/, http://api.feedster.com/ping, http://www.popdex.com/addsite.php, http://ping.rootblog.com/rpc.php, and http://www.lasermemory.com/lsrpc/.

Social bookmark your own posts
Create an account with the top social bookmarking services and bookmark each new post that you write. These are some of the ones I use: Digg, Delicious, Propeller, Technorati, Reddit, Google Bookmarks, Yahoo Bookmarks, MSN Bookmarks, Blinklist, Linkagogo, Wists, Kaboodle, Furl, Faves, and StumbleUpon.

Add social bookmarking capabilities to your blog
Give people the opportunity to bookmark your posts. There are several plugins that work for most blogging platforms. My favorites are ShareThis and Sociable.

Send a press release
I use PRWeb Premium service only when I launch a new blog for a client. It costs $360 so you can understand why I don’t recommend doing this for every new post you write. For new posts I use the free option of PR.com. You don’t get maximum exposure but it’s free and it only takes a couple of minutes to send a release using their service.

Submit your blog to the major blog directories
These are my favorite free blog directories. List your blog in all of them!

http://www.blog-search.com/, http://www.blogarama.com/, http://www.blogbunch.com/, http://www.blogcatalog.com/, http://www.blogcode.com/, http://www.blogexplosion.com/, http://www.blogflux.com/, http://www.bloggernity.com/, http://www.bloghop.com/, http://www.bloghub.com/, http://www.bloglisting.net/, http://www.blogrankings.com/, http://www.blogtoplist.com/, http://www.britblog.com/, http://findingblog.com/, http://www.geekyspeaky.com/links/, http://www.getblogs.com/, http://www.globeofblogs.com/, http://www.iblogbusiness.com/, http://www.lsblogs.com/, http://myblog2u.com/, http://www.quickblogdirectory.com/, http://sportsblogs.org/, http://www.theweblogreview.com/index.php, http://www.weblogalot.com/, and http://www.dmoz.org.

There are also some really good paid options, if budget allows:

http://www.joeant.com/, http://www.alivedirectory.com/, http://www.avivadirectory.com/, http://blogs.botw.org/, http://www.bloggeries.com/, http://www.bloguniverse.com/, http://www.business.com/, http://www.site-sift.com/, http://www.umdum.com/, http://www.uncoverthenet.com/, and http://dir.yahoo.com/.

Web 2.0 social networks
Submitting your articles to the most popular Web 2.0 social networks can seriously boost your traffic. For a comprehensive list of these networks check out this link: http://www.theoutsourcingcompany.com/bl ... -articles/

Forums and blogs
Interact with your community, provide useful tips, and answer their questions. Become an authority in the field and invite them to visit your blog. Don’t spam them, though. Make sure that you are helping them, not just posting your blog’s link everywhere.

Use viral marketing
I think that all blogs should have an option to “Tell your friends” about it. Sure, your visitors can copy your link, open their email clients, and send your blog’s link to their friends. But if you don’t make it easy for them, chances are that they won’t.

Use an Open Mind in Your Promotion

Three qualities that effective book promotion requires, include:

An open mind
Curiosity
Creativity

These traits will help you search for ways to improve your approach, your promotion, your website and more. You need to always be looking for ways to improve. Potential readers, book stores and other will usually respond to useful input from you. This doesn’t mean everything you suggest will be a valuable nugget of information.

Authors Need An Open Mind in Book Promotion

Remember that we never know where the best promotional ideas will originate. Give people the chance to share their thoughts and suggestions. This is when you need to keep an open mind. Once you consider the idea, decide if you can use the suggestion. If you don’t understand the idea, ask questions. I’ve found that many times, suggestions can give me ideas to use, or it may spur new thoughts and ideas.

The simple answer is to give people a chance to give you ideas about how to promote your books. If the thoughts are useless, then toss them. Very few suggestions turn into wonderful ideas, but you will never find the golden nuggets if you don’t open your mind.

Curious Authors Can Have Great Promotional Success

Are you a curious person? Do you like to learn more about the things around you? Find a way to use that inborn curiosity to offer better books to your readers. It can also help you discover new ways to promote your work to potential readers. No matter whether you are offering one book or twenty books, you can find better ways to promote them.

Creativity Is Essential For Authors

Authors must be creative in their writing, so why not be creative with your book promotion? Curiosity offers you a chance to stretch your promotional creativity. This is a example of “thinking outside the box”. Open your mind and let your imagination run free. Transfer those ideas to your promotional plans. This doesn’t mean that everything you try will work perfectly. You will probably need to make adjustments, but it gets a little better with each change.

Traditional Demographics Don't Apply

I just found this article and had to share it --

‘Generation V’ Defies Traditional Demographics

The online behavior, attitudes and interests of people from all walks of life are blending together online, cutting across generations and traditional demographics and giving rise to a new online group called “Generation Virtual” (Generation V), according to research by Gartner, which coined the term.

Unlike previous generations, Generation V is not defined by age, gender, social class or geography. Instead, it is based on achievement, accomplishments and an increasing preference for the use of digital media channels to discover information, build knowledge and share insights.

Marketers will ultimately need a separate marketing strategy to reach this generation, according to Gartner.

Within the Generation V community, Gartner defines four levels of engagement - creators, contributors, opportunists, and lurkers - related to the extent to which customers engage with other customers and the level of engagement that businesses and other organizations must have to enable them:

Findings about these Generation V segments:

* Up to 3% will be creators, providing original content. They can be advocates that promote products and services.
* Between 3% and 10% will be contributors who add to the conversation, but don’t initiate it. They can recommend products and services as customers move through a buying process, looking for purchasing advice.
* Between 10% and 20% will be opportunists, who can further contributions regarding purchasing decisions. Opportunists can add value to a conversation that’s taking place while walking through a considered purchase.
* Approximately 80% will be lurkers, essentially spectators, who reap the rewards of online community input but absorb only what is being communicated. They can still implicitly contribute and indirectly validate value from the rest of the community. All users start out as lurkers.

To address the different needs of these groups, Gartner recommends that marketing organizations segment and support all four engagement levels in the community with appropriate technology and establish goals with plans for determining return on investment (ROI).

“Companies should plan to segment all four levels in the community - each has significant business value,” said Adam Sarner, principal research analyst at Gartner. “Differentiation exists between sectors and industries. Marketers with strong brands attract more creators. Certain industries, such as insurance, draw more lurkers.”

Brainstorm Your Book Promotion

A great way to get promotional ideas for your books is through brainstorming with other writers. This can easily be done with online message boards, forums and marketing groups can be a huge help. I’ve been a member of networking groups where you work on marketing ideas together and the members promote each other. This works face to face, online or over the phone.

Work With Other Authors to Brainstorm Promotions

You can create a group of people so that you can brainstorm ideas. This group can be made up of friends, family or business associates. Anyone who can and will offer useful input about your ideas can be part of this group. You can post a link on your website to ask people for their thoughts. It would be interesting to post a graphic of a “suggestion box” and invite visitors to send their ideas.

Online Book Brainstorming Options

This doesn’t need to be an expensive promotional opportunity. Online promotional brainstorming should be free. Our promotional forum is a great way to brainstorm and share ideas. Anyone can ask questions, start a discussion, ask for feedback about your website or let your hair down and have some fun. This offers chances to become acquainted and to share ideas and suggestions. You may even find writers who write similar genres, use the same settings or any other similarities.

Book Promotion Does Not Need To Be A Solitary Activity

Working together along with sharing ideas and suggestions is also a way for all of us to learn more and to develop new friendships. These friendships can easily turn into productive promotional relationships for each person who is involved. I’ve also found the people who participate and help one another, attract more attention to their books.

The Eco-Friendly Book Tour

The Eco - Friendly Book Tour

By Nikki Leigh

Each day we hear that the price of gas has hit an “all time high.” Those words don’t seem to mean much anymore. Unfortunately, any “all time high” will be obsolete within a day or two. We each battle the cost of driving and traveling every day. So, what is an author to do if they want to do a book tour to promote their book?

An Environmentally Friendly Book Tour
The environmentally conscious answer is - a virtual book tour. There are many benefits to a virtual book tour over a brick and mortar store tour. These benefits include:

· Conserve gas
· Save money
· Stay home with family
· No need to leave job in order to tour

We've all had book signings where very few people attended. Sadly, book signings aren't the big attraction they used to be – unless it is a big name author. It can be very expensive and disheartening to plan to book signing and have only a handful of people attend. Does that mean that mid list or small press authors can’t have a successful tour? There is another option. I suggest a virtual book tour or a virtual blog tours.

Define a Virtual Book Tour
A virtual book tour is held on the internet and it includes a series of guest appearances over a certain period of time. These appearances can be on blogs, chats, newsletters, radio shows and Web sites. Each online appearance can include: author information, book excerpts, book summary, book synopsis, a guest post about a topic that relates to the book topic or genre, a guest post about writing, author interviews, character interviews, radio show interviews and much more.

Any author can do a book tour from the comfort of their home. Weather has no effect on a virtual tour. Whether you have two feet of snow in your driveway or sweltering heat, you can still have a virtual book tour. It is critical that you have a computer, an internet connection and electricity - but it can definitely be done.

Find Your Target Audience

I highly recommend that the tour of blogs, radio shows, Web sites, etc are held on sites that have themes which are relevant to the book topic or genre. Writing and reader sites are good choices for part of the virtual tour. Any site that attracts the target audience for the book would be a great place to schedule a tour appearance. I explain this in much more detail when I work with an author to coordinate their tour. The virtual “tour” allows authors to reach many people as they travel through the blogosphere. Many people claim to find the target audience in their tours, but look for proof. Getting in front of the people who are interested in the content and who need your book can be very effective.

What’s holding you back? Do you have a book that you would like to promote? It would be great to get more information about how the tour works and what it could do for you. For more information, feel free to visit the Promo 101 Virtual Blog Tour blog - http://www.virtualblogtour.blogspot.com/. It can be very beneficial to take time to discuss your book promotional goals to see how a virtual book tour can work for you.

Interview About Virtual Blog Tours

There is a reasonably new promotional option that is beneficial for many business people. Its something that more and more authors are doing each month - quite a few of these authors have done more than one tour.

This new option is called a Virtual Book Tour, a Virtual Blog Tour or a VBT. A virtual tour means that the author or other business person "tours" a series of blogs to promote their product or service. There is much more information on my website about virtual tours. If you would like more details, visit - http://www.nikkileigh.com/virtual_tours.htm

This week, an interview with me about the virtual blog tours that I do was published in the business section of the LoveToKnow.com website. This is the link for anyone who would like to learn more - http://business.lovetoknow.com/wiki/How_to_Promote_Your_Book_Online

Feel free to contact me with any questions. I can be reached at nikki_leigh22939@yahoo.com
